I am often asked why I persist in making photographs with film (aka "the old fashioned way") instead of running with the herd headlong into the digital world. Given the rapid growth of digital imaging, the question is a fair one. My reasons are simple. First and foremost, I enjoythe photographic process itself. Nothing is more relaxing that spending a day in the darkroom, frequently accompanied by one or more of my daughters, who also never tire of making images. I just don't get the same feeling from Second, my preferred medium is large format. Digital imaging still has not progressed far
enough to meet the requirements of the large format photographer. My negatives are a minimum of 4 X 5 inches and not infrequently are 8 X 10 inches. Digital sensors, while improving all the time, are still not practical for the view camera Third, and perhaps most important, photography with the view camera is still a contemplative process. It takes time to visualize in your mind what you want the image to be. The urge to fire off frame after frame with your trusty digital camera is in contrast to the way I approach making images. I can often spend an entire day and return with only a single image. Sometimes the hunt is more fun than the kill. Fourth, I am dreadfully color blind. My attempts at color balancing images in Photoshop are disastrous. I am much better with the Zone System. Digital imaging is the future I'm certain, but for now I'm still a film guy. |
